How to do Wudu
The following page will show how to perform correctly Wudu (Purification)
1. Wash both hands up to the wrists together three times, make sure every part including between the fingers is washed by the water.
2. With the right hand take a handful of water into the mouth, rinse the mouth three times.
3. Sniff water from the right palm into the nose and then expel the water with the left hand, do this three times.
4. Wash the face, from ear to ear, forehead to chin, repeat three times.
5. Wash the right arm from the wrist to the elbow, repeat three times. Do the same with the left arm.
6. Pass wetted hands over the head from forehead to the back and back to forehead, do this once only.
7. Pass wetted fingers through the ears, using the first finger of each hand go across the inside of the each ear, while the thumb runs across the outside, do this once only
8. Wash both feet up to the ankles. Start with the right, making sure that all parts in particularly between the toes are wetted.
**If you had performed complete Wudu before putting on your socks, it is not necessary to take them off when you want to repeat Wudu. It is sufficient to pass over the stocking feet with wetted hands. This may be done for a period of one day, (and three days while travelling) with the restriction that the socks are never removed. If they are removed, you must re-wash the feet for Wudu.
The wudu ends with the recitation of the Shahadah:
“Ash hadu ann la ilaha illallahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammad abduhu wa rasoolu”
‘I bear witness there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and Mohammed is his servant and messenger.”
What breaks Wudu
Wudu must be performed again if one does any of the following: breaks wind, touches genitals, becomes sexually excited, goes to the lavatory, or falls sleep lying down, vomits violently, gets a flow of blood from an injury, or a flow of impure fluids.
Other forms of Purification
The greater purification, Ghusl, is required when you are determined un-clean as a result of marital intercourse, nocturnal emission (a wet dream),child birth, or when entering into Islam.
The procedure is done as follows:
Begin with the name of Allah:
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim – In the name of Allah the most beneficient, the most merciful
Wash the hands and the affected parts of the body with water to remove any impurity.
Perform Wudu as above. Then wash the whole body three times, using clean water for each wash.
Tayammum (Dry Ablution)
At certain times it may become either impossible or unhealthy due to illness, to use water for Wudu or Ghusl. In these times, Tayammum (dry ablution) is performed.
The procedure: Begin with the name of Allah.
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim – In the name of Allah the most beneficient, the most merciful
Strike both palms on sand, or on a wall, stone, etc. Wipe the palms of the hands over the face once. Strike the sand again with the palms. Rub the right hand with the left palm from the wrist to the elbow, do the same with the left hand.
Finish with the Shahadah as for Wudu.
