Ramadan Series – Fasting in the Quran

Posted on August 18, 2008. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , |

Assalam alaikum and peace to all

Thought it would be a nice reminder to all to see the verses where fasting is mentioned in the Quran.

2:183 O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint,

2:184 (Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.

2:185 Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.

2:187 Permitted to you, on the night of the fasts, is the approach to your wives. They are your garments and ye are their garments. Allah knoweth what ye used to do secretly among yourselves; but He turned to you and forgave you; so now associate with them, and seek what Allah Hath ordained for you, and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast Till the night appears; but do not associate with your wives while ye are in retreat in the mosques. Those are Limits (set by) Allah. Approach not nigh thereto. Thus doth Allah make clear His Signs to men: that they may learn self-restraint.

2:196 And complete the Hajj or ‘umra in the service of Allah. But if ye are prevented (From completing it), send an offering for sacrifice, such as ye may find, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches the place of sacrifice. And if any of you is ill, or has an ailment in his scalp, (Necessitating shaving), (He should) in compensation either fast, or feed the poor, or offer sacrifice; and when ye are in peaceful conditions (again), if any one wishes to continue the ‘umra on to the hajj, He must make an offering, such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, He should fast three days during the hajj and seven days on his return, Making ten days in all. This is for those whose household is not in (the precincts of) the Sacred Mosque. And fear Allah, and know that Allah Is strict in punishment.

Short verses

In your Salah (daily prayers) you must recite portions of the Quran
There are several shorter surah’s (verses) that you may say after the recitation
of Al-Fatiha. These are a list of some of them in English as well as in transliteration.

Al-Ikhlas – The Purity (112:1-4)

Qul huwa Allahu ahad
Allahu assamad
Lam yalid walam yoolad
Walam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad

Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;
He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;
And there is none like unto Him.

Al-‘Asr – The Time (103-1-3)

WalAAasr
Inna alinsana lafee khusr
Illa allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo assalihati
watawasaw bilhaqqi watawasaw bissabr

By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
Verily Man is in loss,
Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and
(join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience
and Constancy.

Al-Fil – The Elephant (105 :1-5)

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biashabi alfeel
Alam yajAAal kaydahum fee tadleel
Waarsala AAalayhim tayran ababeel
Tarmeehim bihijaratin min sijjeel
FajaAAalahum kaAAasfin makool

Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the Companions of the Elephant?
Did He not make their treacherous plan go astray?
And He sent against them Flights of Birds,
Striking them with stones of baked clay.
Then did He make them like an empty field of stalks and straw,
(of which the corn) has been eaten up.

Quraish (106:1-4)

Lieelafi quraysh
Eelafihim rihlata ashshitai wassayf
FalyaAAbudoo rabba hatha albayt
Allathee atAAamahum min jooAAin waamanahum min khawf

For the covenants (of security and safeguard enjoyed) by the Quraish,
Their covenants (covering) journeys by winter and summer,-
Let them adore the Lord of this House,
Who provides them with food against hunger, and
with security against fear (of danger).

Al-Kauthar – A River in Paradise (108:1-3)

Inna aAAtaynaka alkawthar
Fasalli lirabbika wanhar
Inna shaniaka huwa alabtar

To thee have We granted the Fount (of Abundance).
Therefore to thy Lord turn in Prayer and Sacrifice.
For he who hateth thee, he will be cut off (from Future Hope).

Al-Kafirun – The Disbelievers (109:1-6)

Qul ya ayyuha alkafiroon
La aAAbudu ma taAAbudoon
Wala antum AAabidoona ma aAAbud
Wala ana AAabidun ma Aaabadtum
Wala antum AAabidoona ma aAAbud
Lakum deenukum waliya deen

Say : O ye that reject Faith!
I worship not that which ye worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
To you be your Way, and to me mine.

An-Nasr – The Help (110:1-3)

Itha jaa nasru Allahi walfath
Waraayta annasa yadkhuloona fee deeni Allahi afwaja
Fasabbih bihamdi rabbika wastaghfirhu innahu kana tawwaba

When comes the Help of Allah, and Victory
And thou dost see the people enter Allah’s Religion in crowds,
Celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness:
For He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy).

Al-Masad – The Palm Fiber (111:1-5)

Tabbat yada abee lahabin watab
Ma aghna AAanhu maluhu wama kasab
Sayasla naran thata lahab
Wamraatuhu hammalata alhatab
Fee jeediha hablun min masad

Perish the hands of the Father of Flame! Perish he!
No profit to him from all his wealth, and all his gains!
Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame!
His wife shall carry the (crackling) wood – As fuel!-
A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck!
Al-Falaq – The Day Break (113:1-5)

Qul aAAoothu birabbi alfalaq
Min sharri ma khalaq
Wamin sharri ghasiqin itha waqab
Wamin sharri annaffathati fee alAAuqad
Wamin sharri hasidin itha hasad

Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn
From the mischief of created things;
From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads;
From the mischief of those who practise secret arts;
And from the mischief of the envious one as he practises envy.

An-Nas – The Mankind (114:1-6)

Qul aAAoothu birabbi annas
Maliki annas
Ilahi annas
Min sharri alwaswasi alkhannas
Allathee yuwaswisu fee sudoori annas
Mina aljinnati wannas

Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind,
The King (or Ruler) of Mankind,
The Allah (for judge) of Mankind,-
From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper),-
(The same) who whispers into the hearts of Mankind,-
Among Jinns and among men.

    This site is for the new revert/convert to Islam, offering information and support as well as a place to just talk about your experiences and daily life living with Islam. If you are wondering why some people refer to converts as reverts it’s because there is a belief in Islam that we are all born in the state of purity, we are all born as people who submit to the Will of God, the One True God and it is only later through family and or society that we end up following a different path or religion. So when one comes back to that original state we call them ‘reverts’ instead of converts.The purpose of this site is to help, support and inform the new revert about Islam.
